Description
This striking black-and-white photograph captures the dramatic presence of Shiprock (Tsé Bitʼaʼí), a massive volcanic rock formation rising out of the high-desert plain in the Navajo Nation of San Juan County, New Mexico.
The main pinnacle stands prominently on the left, its jagged, vertical spires reaching toward the clouds. The high-contrast monochrome highlights the deep shadows and weathered textures of the monadnock, giving it an ancient, imposing character. Stretching out to the right is one of Shiprock’s famous radiating dikes—a long, wall-like ridge of igneous rock that cuts across the desert floor like the spine of a prehistoric creature.
